Pakistani ambush kills 5 Indian soldiers inside Indian territory - Hindustan Times

Five Indian soldiers were killed in an ambush by Pakistan Army and militants' joint operation inside the Indian territory along the LoC in Poonch sector late Monday evening.

The attack happened 400 metres inside Indian territory, army sources told HT.

One jawan was critically injured. Defence sources say the deceased have been identified as one Junior Commission Offier (JCO) and four jawans. Army has pushed in more troops in the area and senior officers have rushed to the spot.

A heavily armed group of 15 to 20 men opened fire at the Indian patrol a little after midnight when the patrol - comprising six men - was out on an area domination patrol in the Poonch sector.

A senior army official said, "The group opened fire which resulted in five deaths. Our soldier fired back too but were outnumbered."

According to army sources, the ambush was carried out by the border action team of the Pakistan army, which comprises of commandos and also dreaded terrorist of Lashkar-e-Taiba, Hizbul Mujahideen and Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorist outfits.

The attack was carried out by 801 Mujahid regiment of Pakistan army.

The sources said one of the terrorists involved in this ambush has been identified as Mohammad Anwar, who was also involved in beheading of Indian soldiers in Poonch area on January 8.

Mohammad is believed to be specialists in such operations and is roped in by the Pakistan Army.

Pakistan army has been in the past one month consistently firing along the LoC and also making incursion attempts.

According to sources, dreaded terrorists Hafiz had also recently visited the forward areas along the LoC in Poonch sector and devised a strategy along with Pakistan army to push in terrorists and also carry out attack.

Chief minister Omar Abdullah had tweeted: "My heartfelt condolences to their next of kin. These incidents don't help efforts to normalise or even improve relations with Pak and call in to question the Pak Govt's recent overtures."

Pakistan denies firing on Indian troops on Kashmir border
Pakistani security officials denied any involvement on Tuesday in the deaths of Indian soldiers on the disputed and heavily militarised border in Kashmir.

"There was no indiscriminate firing from our side," one security official told Reuters.

Another official, who also spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to reporters, denied there had been an exchange of fire on the border between the nuclear powers.

"There was no such incident whatsoever," he said. "There was no firing on the border." Read more...

India on Tuesday summoned Pakistani Deputy High Commissioner Mansoor Ahmad Khan and lodged a strong protest over the killing of five Indian soldiers in Poonch in Jammu and Kashmir.

Pak attack on Indian post does not to help normalise ties: Omar
Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah today said the killing of five Indian soldiers along the LoC in Poonch sector puts a question mark on Pakistan government's overtures to India for improving ties.

"(I) was briefed early this morning about the news that five of our soldiers had been killed on the LoC. My heartfelt condolences to the next of the kin," Abdullah said on microblogging site Twitter.

"These incidents don't help efforts to normalise or even improve relations with Pakistan and call into question the Pakistan's government's recent overtures," he said. Read more...
